Meeting

Otago Mayoral Forum - June 2025

13 June 2025

The Forum met in June to discuss ongoing water services and resource management reforms, Otago's regional deal proposals, and work towards the next Otago triennial agreement. Representatives from Te Uru Kahika and Taituarā presented on resource management reform, and the Forum heard from Otago's Kainga Ora Regional Director on social housing matters.

Forum highlights

Triennial agreement

  • Every three years, the Local Government Act requires local authorities in a region to consider and codify how they will coordinate and communicate in the triennium ahead. Forum members were invited  to reflect on the Otago Mayoral Forum over the last three years, before work begins on a refreshed triennial agreement and Mayoral Forum terms of reference.

Water services

  • Forum members shared updates on water services reform discussions at their respective councils. This includes ongoing collaboration across a four-council group that includes Waitaki, Clutha and Central Otago.

Resource management reform

  • The forum heard from Al Cross, Te Uru Kahika, and Clare Wooding, Taituarā, on key elements of the Government’s ongoing resource management reforms.

Regional deals

  • Forum members shared updates on regional deal proposals in Otago. A decision on which regions are to progress to the next stage is due shortly.

Kainga Ora

  • The Forum heard from Kerrie Young, Regional Director for Kainga Ora in Otago. Ms Young was accompanied by Regional Public Service Commissioner for Otago and Southland Steph Voight, as part of the Forum's commitment to a joined-up public service in Otago.
